In a new burst of information regarding the next Ghostbusters film, Borys Kit of The Hollywood Reporter is calling the project a "reboot" and says that with Paul Feig on board, it will "no longer be connected to the earlier movies but now launch a new series."
He goes on to report that the current script by Men in Black 3 scribe Etan Cohen will be "rehauled" by both Paul Feig and writer Katie Dippold. Dippold wrote for Parks & Rec and co-wrote "The Heat" and "The Heat 2" with Feig.
The article states "Feig and his Feigco Entertainment partner Jessie Henderson will executive produce" but makes no mention of Feig being confirmed to direct beyond talks that started this summer. With his writing and producing in place, it seems very likely that director status will follow.
So how much of this film will be unconnected to the earlier movies? All of it? Will the movie go entirely without a root in the lore or design elements of the first films? There is a very real possibility that this announcement has officially killed "Ghostbusters 3," and sparked Ghostbustettes. We will see how accurate Kit's information is as time goes on and interviews kick up.
UPDATE: Paul Feig reconfirms he is making the film with a tweet.
It's official. I'm making a new Ghostbusters & writing it with @katiedippold & yes, it will star hilarious women. That's who I'm gonna call.

Thanks to Davide for the tip.
And so begins the death of the Ghostbusters franchise. To you guys who have never cared for Ghostbusters II (and lordy knows why???) you are about to gleefully kiss it's butt forevermore. This is dreadfull and extremely sad news. So many years of hard development all gone to waste for THIS! Fans will simply never accept a notion such as this. You cannot, CANNOT, have new Ghostbusters introduced without having the original guys be a part of it. I do not think a general audience will be pleased either. What we have here is a schlock gimmick for a new cash cow franchise feeding off the famous name of an amazing fantasy series. Mr Feig is way over his head messing with a beloved franchise as this and there was always an excellent opportunity there to have the old characters back and have one last adventure (if nothing else beyond that) with them. That was always worth doing surely rather than this?
ReplyDeleteTo not hear the wonderful hilarious Brooklyn accent of Annie Potts again (the only "hilarious" woman I need to see thank you very much Mr Feig!), to not have Slimer, the old Firehouse, Ecto 1, Ray, Winston, e.c.t, e.c.t, e.c.t. The list goes on and on. Friends, this is simply not going to be Ghostbusters.
Poor Dan Ackroyd. I feel he's going to be the butt of many hate filled jokes from fans when this travesty is unleashed. He tried so hard to do it right but it seems he's been overruled or led astray from the true magic we all wanted to see return. I'd have been overjoyed if Reitman's son or even John Landis' son (who had a pretty cool intro idea on his twitter page) had taken over this. They'd have been respectful and done it proper I'm sure.

ReplyDeleteBingo.
This is terrible news.
ReplyDeleteNever has this pun been so appropriate in this time of desperate anguish: I don't want these Ghostbusters. I want THE REAL GHOSTBUSTERS!!!! lol
ReplyDeleteThere you go folks, you can have that one on me. There's the title of the true Ghostbusters III surely. Because when this mess of a Paul Feig movie is criticised to hell and back (and jeez will it surely be), chances are Sony will see the light and do the Ghostbusters "sequel" we all want. They reportedly are going to reboot Spider-Man...again lol So reboot the boys in gray right back when we've all drowned our sorrows from this complete nightmare.
Isn't it ironic Feig semi quotes "Who ya gonna call?". Considering he wishes not to use anything from the 2 movies we've grown up with he already seems to be in a hurry to exploit their imagery for his own foolish means. Is that even legal?
Heck is Ackroyd's writing even still going to be apart of this bringing in that new lady writer (who's resume is hardly filled with a "Blues Brothers", "Caddyshack" or "Stripes" in sight). What happened to making a movie Harold Ramis would be proud of? Surely Ivan Reitman knew what the fans we're hoping to see again. How could he allow this disgrace to wreck his lovely past work?
So what does this mean for this very website blog? I've followed this page since 2009 and often enjoyed reading the posts. To the guy who runs things here you've done an excellent job but I imagine your as underwelmed as I am right now. Is it even worth commenting on developments now? It's all just gonna infuriate everyone isn't it? lol Such a shame. If a proper third movie was about to go into production this site would have been my go to place for set photos and whatever. How exciting would that have all been? *sob*
I have been excited about this for a number of years. But the news that it possibly isn't connected to the previous universe is a very sad thought.
ReplyDeleteWaited all those years... but not for this. Who's gonna ruin the franchise? Paul Feig!
