Dan Aykroyd Says It At Last "Bill Murray Will Not Do The Movie”

A million Ghostbusters fans cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.

We finally have Aykroyd quoted on Murray's GB3 stance. Bill Murray won't be in the movie. The end. Of my dreams.

Maybe if Wes Anderson directed it. And he played a historical figure instead of Peter Venkman... no, no. There is just no saving it.Guys, I'm gonna say it. I don't want this film without Murray. So the blog stops here. It's been a fun few years tracking this project. I know it will never end. They'll do a CGI movie some day, new cartoons and comics will follow the adventures of the Ghostbusters. Maybe we'll get a video game sequel if we're lucky. But for now, I consider the project a non-starter. Want GBIII? Play the video game, my friends. Play the video game.

  1. Seriously?
    You're gonna be like this?
Just cause Bill is not in it, you call it quits?
You sound like every fanboy i have ever run into "can't have it how i want it, so i just don't want it".
For me it was never ONE person who carried these movies, and to all the sudden go "no no no, Bill won't be in it so it's not worth it" it's just ridiculous.
I for one am still looking forward to it, i will just have to get my news someplace else i guess.

  2. Haha. I love how worked up you are.

227 articles about Ghostbusters 3 and you get a direct quote saying "Bill Murray won't do the movie", you get a little bummed.

There's just no way I can see it coming out and deal with every review saying "but why isn't Bill Murray in this?". I feel like a Murry-less film would have me grinding my teeth in the theater. Ghostbusters needs Venkman. See: Extreme Ghostbusters.

From here the next article I could post is "we've rewritten the script". That has to be a year away at least. Sounds like a good time to hang up the blogger gloves.

I've written a compendium here where you can track the progress of the third movie from the start of the video game through the revival of interest in Murray to the end of Murray's interest. I honestly didn't expect it to go this far.

I may post a review of Proton Charging's hellbent pages. They are posting some very soon. Those are forth coming. If anyone ever leaks the 2011 version of the GB3 script, I'll review that too. I'd LOVE to have that.

    Thanks for reading!

  3. Well said in your very last post dude! I'm as gutted as you are and my interest has disintegrated entirely too. Hmm...maybe Beetlejuice 2 is making progress lol It just isn't fun in sequels when a member of a gang dosen't show up for a "party". If any one of the group besides Murray said no to it I'd still prefer the project to be terminated. At least GBII had the dignity to bring EVERYONE back as Annie Potts herself was stunned to find. It's on record somewhere on youtube lol Well except for poor old Walter Peck, that was a great shame!

People seem to be forgetting what if the script truly is awful? We haven't read the thing. Perhaps Murray has done us a favor. I'm not crazy about the writers of the US Office writing it (I'm afraid I'm british, sorry lol). I'd rather it was Akroyd and Ramis again. Plus I think other people will begin to pull out of it now and that's doom for any sequel.

Thanks for a cool blog. Who knows things might still change for the better. If so I hope you'll restart it again. That President Lenny idea is just too good to waste!

  4. Well, i still look forward to it.
For me one person can not brake me from enjoying it.
If Bill is gonna be like that, fine.
I never watched the passed movies for him anyhow.

  5. Hey,

I generally don't read blogs, and I rarely ever comment on a stranger's blog (in fact, I think this might be a first). It's also one of three non-work related pages in my favourites.
I moved from Canada to Scotland about 2.5 years ago. I found this blog shortly after that and have been reading it ever since. Like everyone reading this blog, I am a huge Ghostbusters fan and was really pushing for the third one to get made.
Anyways, when I read your last post, I was surprised to feel a tinge of sadness when you stated that this would be the end of the line for you. I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your posts over the last couple of years. I know it's just a blog about a movie (and a sequel, at that), but I loved the posts, and it's actually kind of turned out to be a long-standing part of my life in Scotland, since I started reading it right after moving here. It was definitely exciting right around October 2010, when Bill was wearing his jumpsuit at the Spike Scream Awards and audition calls were being sent out. That Meccano set analogy was pretty hilarious, too.
Anyways, just wanted to say thanks for everything, it's been a heck of a ride. Who knows, maybe Bill will come around eventually, or maybe a third script without him will be pretty good anyways. I think you're right, some project will come down the line eventually. Hopefully something that appeals to the best in each and every one of us (something decent, pure and good). I'll keep the page in my favourites just in case, because really, when you need Ghostbusters 3 news, Who Ya Gonna Call?

    Thanks for everything,

  6. ^ Double "like". When I announced this blog on the message boards back 5 years ago, I was greeted by the community with less than open arms.

"But", I said "This will be completely GB3 focused, nobody is doing that!" I think the thread ended there.

Truth is, at the time I was living with one of the producers of the video game and I knew this was all coming. I knew Murray was coming back and I couldn't tell anybody. So if I had to wait, I decided I would be the first to post anything leaked publicly and guide people away from rumors.

    I think I succeeded there.

Most glad I could write something worth looking forward to!

  7. People seem to forget to mention that Bill Murray controls one-fifth of Ghostbusters. This is not just a matter of one of the actors calling it quits. He's more than just one of the actors, he's one of the "owners" so to speak. They cannot make the movie without his OK. THE END.

  8. I disagree, I don't think they should have tried to have any of the original cast as primary characters. It's been far too long and they've grown far too old. Hell, they would have been too old in the 90s when fans were screaming for some GB action. If anything, they should have treated the new movie like the RPG was treated, a branch new branch of the Ghostbusters franchise being some-what guided (or misguided) by the original Ghostbusters over the phone.

A movie doesn't need the original actors to be good, it needs the original ideas, feelings and joke execution.

Perhaps, but a lot of people love the films because of Venkman, Stantz, Spengler, Zeddemore, Janine and the rest. It's THEIR stories we're interested in. There has already been an attempt to create a new team, Extreme Ghostbusters, a 90's cartoon of younger characters led by Egon. Was a good series in my opinion but a lot of fans hated it. Anyway it proves a new group could potentially not work and when your adding live action to it well...your ripe for a greater fall.

I'm not crazy about the choices suggested for new Busters. Anna Faris? Eliza Dusku? What? I know Murray and Aykroyd have seen better days but still they can be way more funnier I'm sure than these bizaare suggestions. Another factor they had was they can act seriously when comedy was not required, which as a kid (when I hardly understood the jokes and believed in the action adventure totally) made the films even more special. Today's "comic actors" stray too far into the comic side of things. It was the balance of sci-fi, comedy, action-adventure, even a little horror that made Ghostbusters very unique in it's time.

I'd feel bad for Dan Aykroyd if they asked him and the guys only to advise the new Busters "over the phone" because their yesterdays news (relic of the bygone 80's e.c.t). It's a little disrespectful since it was a concept they created.

Sorry I'm sounding like a film critic. I need to get out more lol
