We're Back! LEGO Movie Directors Back Out, Lots of Directors "Throwing Their Hats In"

As expected, much has changed in the last two weeks of GB3 Blog inactivity.

First, details were leaked about the four main roles that are expected to be cast as the newest Ghostbusters. Full details are here.

Then, sad news after LEGO Movie directors Lorde and Miller walked away from Ghostbusters 3 talks, though newsbreaker Jeff Sneider says they could very well return to the project and many noted that the duo walked away from the LEGO Movie at first as well.

Meanwhile, Ivan Reitman rode the final wave of promotion for his film Draft Day with news that the studio was having meetings with other directors. Someone out there will take the job, it seems as he noted to PEOPLE that "a lot of directors are throwing their hats in." Reitman had Ernie Hudson at the premiere who had some nice words for Ghostbusters fans. "It's going to be really, really good, which is why it's taken so long." You can read all of his comments here.

Thanks to Andreas and Davide for the tips while I was abroad. Let's get a greenlight on this one before the film turns 30, eh studio?

Lastly... who do you think should direct this beast, if not Lorde and Miller? Akiva Schaffer (Hot Rod, Lonley Island) would be a young choice with a decent record, while Edgar Wright has the sci-fi and comedy chops (Shaun of the Dead, The World's End). Evan Goldberg (This is the End) could potentially do it, but that would infer involvement of his longtime partner Seth Rogen as well.

  1. I'd be interested to see what Edgar Wright would do with it.

  2. Harold Ramis in 2009: "I myself think Sam Raimi could do it, he's both funny and terrific at large effects movies" (Toyfare 144 Interview)

  3. I've been kind of bummed about the whole thing since harold passed away. I've also lost all respect for murray throughout this ridiculous process. I mean, I'm cool with him not wanting any part of it, but this movie has been in development hell since before blair witch came out way back when chris farley was on board with spade, thanks in large part to bill's inability to either make a decision or give up his rights to a property that, for all intents and purposes, he shouldn't have any rights to in the first place.

GB was dan's idea. It was cultivate by ivan, and then nursed along with harold. All three of these men have wanted to make a GB movie together since 1994 and now one of them is gone. Seriously, F U bill.

Beyond all that, I don't think filling the directors chair is going to be that much of an issue as much as filling out a cast full of 'comedic' talents that can also act their asses off when they have to play something straight. Especially knowing that sony wants a 'big name' ensemble, and not knowing of anyone that most people have heard of that can pull off comedy without going silly, absurd or slapstick (which, sadly, is pretty much all 'big time' comedians do now), i don't see good things ahead as much as I'd like to.
