Bill Murray is Digging A Female Ghostbusters Ghostbusters 3 Team, Feig Looking More Likely for Director

Fresh off of the Toronto International Film Festival's "Bill Murray Day", fun video of a Murray/Reitman Q&A here, entertainment reporter Scott Mantz finnagled a quote out of the man-of-the-hour regarding the concept of a female-lead Ghostbusters 3 squad.
Murray: It sounds great to me. It sounds as good an idea as any other! There are a lot of women that could scare off any kind of vapor! No, it’s a grande idea, I don’t know who they’re talking about, but it’s a good idea, I would watch it! I mean, I love Robert Palmer’s videos, so why wouldn’t I love the female Ghostbusters?
With the Robert Palmer comment, it sounds a little more like he was shooting to be funny than dive deep into his thoughts, but a fun nugget none-the-less. Here's a Friday pic of Murray with St. Vincent co-star (and Paul Feig favorite collaborator) Melissa McCarthy, just because. Happy Bill Murray Day!

Meanwhile things keep moving... Ivan Reitman plans to meet with studio folks from Sony at his Toronto restaurant while TIFF is in motion. As for director Paul Feig taking the help, Reitman continues to go on record championing the guy, calling him "perfect" and stating that he expects studio negotiations with Feig to be successful. "I think it's probably going to work out."

Thanks to Davide for the tips.

  1. Murray also thought GB3 was a good idea at one point, so I don't read too deeply into his endorsement. It's difficult for me to watch him re-emerge now playing the ambassador, after killing the dream of a proper GB3 without even reading a script. Had he not told them he would be in the film, this whole thing would have probably never even started; and I wish it hadn't at this point.

The concept of an all-female, big budget, action/comedy isn't a gimmick, but attaching it to Ghostbusters makes it seem like one. It gives me the impression that Sony doesn't have confidence in GB3 anymore, and is trying something unexpected to get people's attention. The problem is, a gender swap is going to require another retooled script. Seeing as they spent almost two years on both the Eisenberg/Stupnitsky and Etan Coen scripts, and seemingly they weren't satisfied enough to move forward, I don't feel that the chances are likely that they will come up with a quality one in less than half that time to shoot by early-2015. But, I feel like it will move ahead anyway, because everyone involved seems to be getting pretty sick of shepherding this project.

Ivan is doing a lot of ducking and dodging in his interviews recently in regards to what this film is going to be. The possibility of this being a reboot devastates me. Moving forward after Harold's passing was bad enough, but doing it without any of the guys? Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters 2 are among my favorite films, and the thought of a new film coming along that doesn't connect to them in any way saps every last bit of my interest. I'm sorry.
