Sony Email Hack Reveals Former Ghostbusters 3 Casting/Title

There's no great way to confirm any of the information leaked in the infamous hack of Sony's internal files beyond directly asking entertainment professionals involved, so we're going to update with this information under the rumor category. Info care of ComicBookMovie.com.

In a December 2013 email from then-director Ivan Reitman to Sony staff, including Amy Pascal, the working subtitle for a now-scrapped iteration of Ghostbusters 3 was revealed to be "Ghostbusters: Alive Again." A casting update shows that Reitman had met with a number of actors, including Jonah Hill, Zach Galifianakis, Brie Larson, Anne Hathaway, Adam Pally, Charlie Day, Jesse Eisenberg and Rebel Wilson. It is unclear if he got far enough to meet with Sacha Baron Cohen, Aziz Ansari or Aubrey Plaza.

Full email below:

Day and Plaza vs. Cohen would have been enough to plunk our butts in theaters. The rest of the choices we're so-so about. Hill had been long rumored. Larson and Pally have yet to claim their voice in the cinema world. You can see that old casting choices are still being pursued today in that there has been a flurry of rumors for Rebel Wilson starring in the Feig reboot over the last few weeks. Reitman's note about Ferrell being wrong for a villain is great.

  1. I'm cool with some of the casting choices, and unsure about others. It's a shame this won't be happening, because the more I think about it, I believe this is the version that should have came to be. Not avenging a dead Peter Venkman or Ghostbusters being a secret government group like MIB. The idea of smart individuals at a university that are poking around with something they don't quite understand, just seems right to me.

I thought that since the script was attached to this email, it was probably only a matter of days before it saw light. It hasn't yet, but I hope it does and turns around some of the negative sentiments about this project. I'm tired of seeing all these articles praising the Feig reboot, in part because they assume there is no way GB3 could have been worthwhile. If the bogus script last month drew a lot of positive praise, I can only imagine Cohen's script certainly would.

    1. We looked into the script attachment, the person who surfaced this email told us that any email with an attachment leaked before August 2014 does not have a file with it. So the script hasn't hit the net, most likely.

  2. Who else thinks, that the Ecto1 in the new teaser trailer is obviously parked in a Barn at the Stantz family dairy farm ?
